At this year's International Conference on Smart Grid and Clean Energy Technologies (ICSGCE 2016) the iimt presented some of the Chair’s research results. Prof. Dr. Stephanie Teufel gave a Keynote speech on Crowd Energy – The Impact of Prosumer Behavior on Smart Environments, while Yves Hertig presented his research titled Prosumer Communities: Electricity as an Interpersonal Construct. The conference took place at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, China. It provided the participants an excellent platform for exchanging and discussing ideas and research results on an international level.
The Swiss utility sector is in transition. The national electricity market is gradually deregulated and new players will continuously enter the market.
The customers’ behaviour driven shift in consumption, new technologies and digitalisation will change existing processes and structures significantly. To such a new situation Swiss utility companies need to rethink their products and services radically. A declared intention for innovation and a seeking of innovation potentials will be the success factor for short and long term business permanently. Existing business models need to be reviewed and renewed.
The objective of the study is to create an overview of the innovation capacities of swiss utility companies. To this end, 16 experts interviews were conducted with members of the management and strategy, from 12 Swiss electricity companies. To validate the testimony of experts, an online test on fitness innovation was conducted among employees of the same companies.

The 20th of September 2016, the successful disputation of the dissertation of Mario Gstrein, Research Assistant, took place at the iimt.
His dissertation with the title „Handling the Crowd – An Explorative Study on the Implications of Prosumer-Consumer Communities on the Value Creation in the future Electricity Network“ was examined by Prof. Dr. Stephanie Teufel (first expert) and Prof. Dr. Andreas Meier (second expert).
Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Bernard Ries approximately 25 persons participated in the disputation, which started with a presentation of Mario Gstrein’s dissertation and was followed by critical questions from the Jury and the participants.
Mario made the next step in order to obtain his doctorate. The iimt congratulates him to this success.
While summer is coming to an end, our September courses are in full swing. After facing financial issues during the June courses, students are now ready to tackle, on one hand, technical issues during the module ICT Management as well as human and relational issues in the module Corporate Communication, and, on the other hand, they will also get in touch with Information Management and Decision Support. Those modules will bring together around 60 participants in total, coming from different backgrounds and countries. In addition to the Executive Programmes and Specialised Courses, two Law students have joined the class; indeed, they benefit from the joint programme organised with the Faculty of Law, the Dual Degree programme. Simultaneously, they are following the Law further education as well as the iimt EMBA.
